Doctor Who: The TV Movie

Briarheart Reviews "Doctor Who: The TV Movie"

Related imageIn 1996, to the horror of Doctor Who fans across the world, it was announced that the series would be returning for one night and one night only as an American-made TV Movie. Needless to say, it was panned by fans and critics alike. Fast-forward twenty-two years later, The Movie certainly has a better reputation than it used to have. However, it is still a story riddled with mediocrity.

I think some of the key issues with this film lie in the dialogue which is mostly exposition and technobabble. I shit you not this movie uses so much technobabble your mind might actually melt trying to understand what these people are saying. Hell, it took me thirteen years and a readthrough of the far superior novelization to get to a point where I could actually somewhat understand what was happening.

Another big issue with this movie is it was originally supposed to be a pilot for a complete remake of the original series, but instead ended up being a continuation. This means that there are a lot of continuity problems within the script. Another big issue with the script is the inclusion of the Seventh Doctor. His onscreen reason for dying is terrible and now we have to deal with a post-regeneration story. I mean, surely since Doctor Who was seven years off air, they could have just opened with Paul as the Doctor, but no. Instead, you have to delve into the EU to find out what that character is actually like. It's just stupid.

As for positives? The actors are great. Paul plays the Doctor really well, Daphne Ashbrook is pretty güd as Grace, Eric Roberts is utterly hilarious as the Master, and Yee Jee Tso is brill as Chang Lee. Also, the Doctor is half-human (yes, I like that idea).

Scientific Conclusion Based on the Evidence Given: ...Meh

EIGHTH DOCTOR AMNESIA COUNTER: 1
