Short Story: Model Train Set

Briarheart Reviews: Model Train Set

Model Train Set was the first short story in the original 1998 Doctor Who: Short Trips anthology. It's a nice way to start off the book with a calm, relaxed story.

The story basically follows Eight's attempt at making a self-functioning model train set out of tiny robots so that when he wants, he can watch and an element of surprise is there. While it may sound like a boring idea at first, the reader finds his or herself becoming just as invested in the project as the Doctor has become. When the Doctor thinks he succeeds the reader feels satisfied and when the Doctor finds out that his plan failed and while he was on an adventure the train set destroyed itself, you feel the Doctor's pain.

It's a cute, fun, and sometimes sad little story with a hopeful ending and a great overarching moral. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to get into the Expanded Universe as it's a very warm welcome. A perfect beginning to a pretty damn decent range of short stories.
